The gross capacity of the Mangla reservoir was 5.88 MAF at first, but it decreased to 4.674 MAF in 2005, and sediment deposition meant that the capacity would probably continue to decline over time. Raising the Mangla Dam was initiated in 2004 and finished in 2009, taking into consideration the capacity loss owing to sedimentation and the raising that had been planned for in the original design and construction. The maximum conservation level was raised from 1202 feet to 1242 feet, which corresponded to an additional 2.88 MAF of water storage capacity. The dam's height has been raised by 30 feet. Because there will be more water available and a rise in machine net head, 644 GWh more energy will be generated.
